| I have been privileged to travel in many countries and in comparison I have observed most American women struggling and juggling when they become mothers. In Africa for example, there is poverty and malnutrition, but the 24/7 support from female relatives and friends means that African moms breastfeed routinely and extensively (they can't believe anyone would write a book about it!). Loving community child care is everywhere all the time!
It breaks my heart knowing how American mothers must put their infants in day care, give up breastfeeding or supplement with formula because they have to return to work, after 6 to 12 weeks. The miniscule maternity leave that most American mothers are forced to accept is SCANDALOUS. In Cuba even, they would receive 6 months leave on full pay...to nurse baby until the first teeth start to emerge along with baby's interest in other food.
FOUR MILLION women give birth each year in the USA. Where is their collective power? NOwhere! They are transients through the health care system and such potential power is thus fragmented.
I was fortunate when I bore and raised my children, that I could work when it suited me, and my work was with expectant and new moms, so being pregnant and postpartum myself only served to legitimate my services.
I have found a couple of home businesses that can help. With residual part-time income, moms can have financial security and avoid stressful pregnancies in jobs where they must work until they deliver (or quit work and go on "bed rest" as does 1 in 7 pregnant women in the USA) and to nurse as long as they desire.
Both companies require a very small investment, offer great support (human and technological) and have their hearts in the right place. I would not endorse a product or service if I did not believe in it myself. Both offer breakthrough, innovative ideas that you can't find in the marketplace. Remember: breastfed babies have an IQ that is 10 points higher! Our babies are our future, and the future of our planet.
